What kinds of workers can be in a union? Who’s not allowed?
Unionizing is for everyone: service workers, public-sector workers like teachers, retail workers, nurses, factory and warehouse workers, even white-collar jobs like tech workers and nonprofit employees. With very few exceptions, if you work for a living, then you can be in the union.
If you’ve never heard of a union in your industry, odds are you’re actually eligible to unionize and you can benefit greatly from it.
Who’s excluded? Managers. Anyone in charge of hiring, firing, and discipline at work has interests opposed to organized labor. But if you aren’t a manager, and the vast majority of working people aren’t, you can unionize.
